Before adding your first product, let’s get familiar with how product categories, tags, and attributes work.

Product Categories

Product categories and tags work in much the same way as normal categories and tags you have when writing posts in WordPress. They can be created, edited, and selected at any time. This can be done when you first create a product or come back and edit it or the category/tag specifically.

Attributes

These can be added per product, or you can set up global attributes for the entire store to use (e.g., in layered navigation).

Product Types

With attributes and categories set up and stock management configured, we can begin adding products. When adding a product, the first thing to decide is what type of product it is.

• Simple – covers the vast majority of any products you may sell. Simple products are shipped and have no options. For example, a book.
• Grouped – a collection of related products that can be purchased individually and only consist of simple products. For example, a set of six drinking glasses.
• Virtual – one that doesn’t require shipping. For example, a service. Enabling this, disables all shipping related fields such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not trigger the shipping calculator in cart and checkout.
• Downloadable – activates additional fields where you can provide a downloadable file. After a successful purchase, customers are given a downloadable file as a link in the order notification email. This is suitable, for example, for a digital album, PDF magazine, or photo.
• External or Affiliate – one that you list and describe on your website but is sold elsewhere.
• Variable – a product with variations, each of which may have a different SKU, price, stock option, etc. For example, a t-shirt available in different colors and/or sizes.
• Other types are often added by extensions. For example, WooCommerce Subscriptions adds new product types as does WooCommerce Bookings.

Adding a simple product

Adding a Simple product is similar to writing a post in WordPress.

1. Go to WooCommerce > Products > Add Product. You then have a familiar interface and should immediately feel at home.
2. Enter a product Title and Description.
3. Go to the Product Data panel, and select downloadable (digital) or virtual (service) if applicable.

Note: Virtual products don’t require shipping — an order with virtual products won’t calculate shipping costs.

Product data

The Product Data meta box is where the majority of important data is added for your products.

General section

• Price
  • Regular Price – Item’s normal/regular price
  • Sale Price – Item’s discounted price that can then be scheduled for certain date ranges. The sale expires at 11:59pm of the specified end date
• Tax
  • Tax status – Taxable / Shipping only / None
  • Tax class – Choose which tax class should be applied

Inventory section

The inventory section allows you to manage stock for the product individually and define whether to allow back orders and more. It enables you to sell products and allow customers to add them to the cart to buy.

Enable Stock Management must be selected in Products Inventory Settings; otherwise, only the ‘Stock status’ option is visible in the Product Data Inventory box.

Options when stock management at product level is disabled. You are responsible for updating the Stock Status.

Options when stock management at product level is enabled.

• Enter the Stock Quantity, and WooCommerce auto-manages inventory and auto-updates Stock Status as Stock, Out of Stock or On Backorder.
• Select whether to Allow Backorders.
• Low stock threshold – Enter a number upon which you are notified.
• Tick the Sold Individually box to limit the product to one per order.

Shipping section

• Weight – Weight of the item.
• Dimensions – Length, width and height for the item.
• Shipping Class – Shipping classes are used by certain shipping methods to group similar products.

Linked Products section

Using up-sells and cross-sells, you can cross promote your products. They can be added by searching for a particular product and selecting the product from the dropdown list:

After adding, they are listed in the input field:

Up-sells are displayed on the product details page. These are products that you may wish to encourage users to upgrade, based on the product they are currently viewing. For example, if the user is viewing the coffee product listing page, you may want to display tea kettles on that same page as an up-sell.

Cross-sells are products that are displayed with the cart and related to the user’s cart contents. As an example, if the user adds a Nintendo DS to their cart, you may want to suggest they purchase a spare stylus when they arrive at the cart page.

Grouping – Used to make a product part of a grouped product. More info below at: Grouped Products.

Attributes section

On the Attributes tab, you can assign details to a product. You will see a select box containing global attribute sets you created (e.g., platform). More at: Managing Product Categories, Tags and Attributes.

Once you have chosen an attribute from the select box, click add and apply the terms attached to that attribute (e.g., Nintendo DS) to the product. You can hide the attribute on the frontend by leaving the Visible checkbox unticked.

Custom attributes can also be applied by choosing Custom product attribute from the select box. These are added at the product level and won’t be available in layered navigation or other products.

Advanced section

• Purchase note – Enter an optional note to send the customer after they purchase the product.
• Menu order – Custom ordering position for this item.
• Enable Reviews – Enable/Disable customer reviews for this item.

Product short description

Add an excerpt. This typically appears next to product imagery on the listing page, and the long description appears in the Product Description tab.

Video embeds (oembed) may be used, as of version 3.1x.

Taxonomies

On the right-hand side of the Add New Product panel, there are product categories in which you can place your product, similar to a standard WordPress post. You can also assign product tags in the same way.

Product images

Add a main product image and a gallery of images. More at: Adding Product Images and Galleries.

Setting catalog visibility options and feature status

In the Publish panel, you can set Catalog Visibility for your product.

• Shop and search – Visible everywhere, shop pages, category pages and search results.
• Shop only – Visible in shop pages and category pages, but not search results.
• Search only – Visible in search results, but not in the shop page or category pages.
• Hidden – Only visible on the single product page – not on any other pages.

You can also set whether the product is promoted in product categories, up-sells, related products as a Featured Product. For example, you could tick the Featured box on all bundles you sell.

Other ways to set as Featured are described in the below section: Mark a product as Featured.

Adding a grouped product

A grouped product is created in much the same way as a Simple product. The only difference is you select Grouped from the Product Type dropdown.

Create the Grouped product

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products > Add New.
2. Enter a Title for the Grouped product, e.g., Back to School set
3. Scroll down to Product Data and select Grouped from the dropdown. The price and several other fields disappear. This is normal because a Grouped Product is a collection of ‘child products’, which is where you add this information.
4. Publish.

The Grouped product is still an empty group. To this Grouped product, you need to:

• Create products and add them
• Add existing child products

Having the choice to first create Simple products and add them to a Grouped product later; or first create a Grouped product and add Simple products later gives you flexibility to add Simple products to more than one Grouped product.

Add products to the Group

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products > Add New.
2. Select the Grouped product you wish to add products to.
3. Scroll down to Product Data and go to Linked Products.
4. Select Grouped Products, and search for the product by typing
5. Click the products you wish to add.
6. Update
7. You can drag and drop to reorder the Grouped Products. Once you press Update, the new order will be shown on the product page.

Adding a virtual product

When adding a Simple product, you can tick the Virtual checkbox box in the product type panel.

With Variable products this checkbox is moved to each variation.

Enabling this, disables all shipping related fields such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not trigger the shipping calculator in cart and checkout.

Adding a downloadable product

When adding a simple product, you can tick the Downloadable checkbox box in the product type panel. This adds two new fields:

• File path — Path or url to your downloadable file.
• Download limit – Limit on number of times the customer can download file. Left blank for unlimited downloads.

Adding an external/affiliate product

Select ‘External/Affiliate’ from the product type dropdown. This removes unnecessary tabs, such as tax and inventory, and inserts a new product URL field. This is the destination where users can purchase the product. Rather than Add to Cart buttons, they see a Read More button directing them to this URL.

Adding a variable product

Variable products are arguably the most complex of product types. They let you define variations of a single product where each variation may have a different SKU, price or stock level.

Duplicating a product

To save time, it’s possible to use a product and duplicate it to create similar products with variations and other qualities.

Go to WooCommerce > Products and look through the list for a product you wish to replicate, then click Duplicate.

Deleting a product

To delete a product:

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
2. Find the product you wish to delete.
3. Hover in the area under the Product name and click Trash.

Mark a product as Featured

To mark a product as featured, go to: Products > Products and select the Star in the featured column. Alternatively, select Quick Edit and then the Featured option.

Filter or sort products

In addition to the options below, WooCommerce Customizer gives you the ability to customize your Product Catalog. Go to: WooCommerce Customizer – Product Catalog.

Filtering products

Use the Filter function to get a product count, view products by type, or see which products are On Backorder or Out of Stock.

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
2. Select a Category, Product Type and/or Stock Status, or any combination of the three.
3. Click Filter.

Sorting products

Sorting is different than Filtering, in that you can drag and drop products to re-order them.

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
2. Select Sorting.
3. Select a Category, Product Type and/or Stock Status, or any combination of the three.
4. Click Filter.

You can now drag and drop products in an order to your liking.

Product ID

A WooCommerce Product ID is sometimes needed when using shortcodes, widgets, and links.

To find the ID, go to Products and hover over the product you need the ID for. The product ID number is displayed.

Allow backorders

Select whether to allow Backorders from the dropdown, if you are managing stock on a product. Use Advanced Notifications (separate purchase) to help notify someone other than the shop admin if backorders are placed.

To allow backorders, the Stock status must be set to In Stock even though the Stock Quantity is 0 or less.

Most payment gateways charge immediately. If you want to wait to charge customers for an item when it’s back in stock, use WooCommerce Waitlist (separate purchase) to email all users, notifying them that the item is back in stock with a link to purchase.

Is it possible to edit several products at the same time?

We recommend organizing your images in a folder offline and keeping a backup in case you need them in the future or mistakenly alter one and wish to revert to the original.

Types of images

WooCommerce uses three types of Product Images for different locations and purposes:

• Single Product Image is the largest image and refers to the main/featured image on your individual product details page.
• Catalog Images are medium-sized images appearing in product loops, such as the Shop page, Product Category pages, Related Products, Up-sells, and Cross-sells.
• Product thumbnails are the smallest images used in the Cart, Widgets, and (optional) Gallery thumbnails underneath the Single Product Image.

Adding Product Images and Galleries

Adding product images and galleries are options available on the right-hand side when adding or editing a product in your store from WooCommerce > Products.

Product image

The Product Image is the main image for your product and is reused in different sizes across your store.

Select Set Product Image.

Select an existing image in your Media Library or Upload a new one.

Remove and Edit the product image if you’d like to change it, as needed.

Adding, removing and editing a product image is done in the same way as featured images for posts and pages.

Product Galleries

Add images to the Product Gallery

Product galleries display all images attached to a product through the Product Gallery meta box.

Create a Product Gallery using the same method as adding a Product Image, but using the Product Gallery meta box.

Reorder images in the product gallery

Images in the product gallery can be re-ordered easily via drag and drop. Simply reorder your images by moving them around.

Remove images from the product gallery

To remove an image from the product gallery, hover over the image and click on the red “x.”

Customer view

Once a product image and gallery have been added, customers can see them in your store.

It’s also possible to Zoom and see a closeup of the image by hovering over it.

Or customers can click the Magnifying Glass+ option in the upper right corner.

And a Lightbox pops up so customers can see a highlighted closeup of the image against a dark background and, if there is one, view the Gallery as a slideshow.

Touch gestures also work on mobile.

FAQ

What is the ideal image size to use with WooCommerce?

We recommend a minimum size of 800 x 800 pixels, width, and height. This renders well for the main/featured image, catalog image, and thumbnail image. Images that are larger are even better, especially if you’re selling items with great detail.

It’s possible to use images of lower resolution. However, your images are a key tool in selling and promoting your products and services online, so they should be of high quality.

What happens if I forget to set an image size?

WooCommerce automatically sets a size for you and generates images for customers to see on the front end.

My images are blurry/fuzzy, how do I fix them?

What is the Lightbox in WooCommerce?

Lightbox is a feature that opens your image or images against a dark backdrop, shining a light on them, similar to a real-life photo lightbox.

Can I turn off the Lightbox?

Yup, see: Disable WooCommerce 3.0x Lightbox. Be aware this is customization beyond what we can help with via our Support Policy.

What is the Image Zoom in WooCommerce?

If you’re looking at a product and hover over it you’ll notice the image zooms in where your cursor is on the image. This is helpful to get a closer and quick look at some products that might have intricate details that aren’t clear in their normal image in your store.

Can I turn off the Image Zoom functionality?

Yes, of course. Just know this is a customization, and we can’t offer help with this under our Support Policy. Nonetheless, see more on Disabling WooCommerce Zoom.

How do I set image dimensions in a custom theme?

If you’re building a custom theme, you may want to configure image settings automatically. Use the snippet here: Set Image Dimensions in a Custom Theme.

I don’t see the Product Images settings described in WooCommerce Customizer above.

This might occur for two reasons:

• You’re using a version of WooCommerce lower than 3.3x.
• Your theme has declared support for a specific image size. This can be undone by using the code given under Theme Support at WooCommerce Image Improvements.

Adding a Variable Product

Step 1. Set the Product Type

To add a variable product, create a new product or edit an existing one.

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products.
2. Select the Add Product button or Edit an existing product. The Product Data displays.
3. Select Variable product from the Product Data dropdown.

Step 2. Add Attributes to Use for Variations

In the Attributes section, add attributes before creating variations — use global attributes that are site-wide or define custom ones specific to a product.

Global Attributes

To use a global attribute:

1. Create global attributes.
2. Select one from the dropdown and click Add.
3. Choose Select all to add all attributes to the variable product (if applicable).
4. Enable the Used for variations checkbox to tell WooCommerce it’s for your variations.
5. Click Save attributes.

Custom Attributes

To add a new attribute specific to this product:

1. Select Custom product attribute and click Add.
2. Name the attribute (e.g., Size).
3. Set values separated by a vertical pipe, | (e.g., Small | Medium | Large).
4. Enable the Used for variations checkbox.
5. Click Save attributes.

Step 3. Add Variations

To add a variation, go to the Variations section in the Product Data meta box.

Manually Add a Variation

1. Select Add variation from the dropdown menu, and select Go.
   

2. Select attributes for your variation. To change additional data, click the triangle icon to expand the variation.

3. Edit any available data. The only required field is Regular Price.
4. Click Save changes.

Creating All Possible Variations

Select Create variations from all attributes to have WooCommerce create every possible combination of variations and click Go:

It will create a new variation for each and every possible combination of variation attributes (max 50 per run). If you have more possible combinations you can run it again.

If you have two attributes – color (with values blue and green) and size (with values large and small) it creates the following variations:

• Large Blue
• Large Green
• Small Blue
• Small Green

Editing Many Variations

If you have more than 15 variations, use the buttons to navigate forward and backward through the list. Each time you navigate to a new set of variations, the previous set is saved. This ensures that all data is saved.

Setting Defaults

Set defaults you prefer on variations. In the example, no default form values were set, so users can pick any color and size right away from the product page.

If you want a certain variation already selected when a user visits the product page, choose the default form values. This also enables the Add to Cart button to appear automatically on variable product pages.

You can only set defaults after at least one variation has been created.

Adding Variation Data

Each variation can have the following properties.

General

• Enabled – Enable or disable the variation.
• Downloadable – If this a downloadable variation.
• Virtual – If this product isn’t physical or shipped, shipping settings are removed.
• Regular Price (required) – Set the price for this variation.
• Sale Price (optional) – Set a price for this variation when on sale.
• Tax status – Taxable, shipping only, none.
• Tax class – Tax class for this variation. Useful if you are offering variations spanning different tax bands.
• Downloadable Files – Shows if Downloadable is selected. Add file(s) for customers to download.
• Download Limit – Shows if Downloadable is selected. Set how many times a customer can download the file(s). Leave blank for unlimited.
• Download Expiry – Shows if Downloadable is selected. Set the number of days before a download expires after purchase.

Inventory Management

Inventory for variable products can be managed on product and variation level.

Сhoose how to manage stock by toggling Enable stock management at product level on the Inventory tab:

The following settings are available if you choose to manage stock on a product level:

• SKU – If you use SKUs, set the SKU or leave blank to use the product’s SKU.
• Manage Stock? – Tick the box to manage stock at the variation level.
• Stock Quantity – Shows if Manage Stock is selected. Input the quantity. Stock for the specific variation, or left blank to use the product’s stock settings.
• Allow Backorders – Choose how to handle backorders.
• Low stock threshold – Enter a number to be notified.
• Sold Individually? – Allow only one to be sold in one order. (This setting is used for the product itself. You cannot set a specific variation to only be sold once per order.)

Choosing to manage stock for variations individually allows you to edit the same properties for each variation.

Set Stock Status can be applied to all variations at once to In stock or Out of stock. Bulk-update under Variations:

Shipping

• Weight – Weight for the variation, or left blank to use the product’s weight.
• Dimensions – Height, width and length for the variation, or left blank to use the product’s dimensions.
• Shipping class – Shipping class can affect shipping. Set this if it differs from the product.

Linked Products

• Upsells
• Cross-sells
• Grouped

If the SKU, weight, dimensions, and stock fields are not set, then it inherits values assigned to the variable product. Price fields must be set per variation.

Add an Image to the Variation

1. Expand the variation.
2. Click the blue image placeholder (screenshot).
3. Select the image you wish to use.
4. Save.

Bulk Editing

You can bulk-edit variations by selecting the specific piece of data you want from the dropdown. In this example, I want to edit prices for all variations:

What Customers See

On the frontend, when viewing a variable product, the user is presented with dropdown boxes to select variation options. Selecting options will reveal information about the variation, including available stock and price.

If the user tries to click the greyed out add to cart button before choosing an attribute, a message will appear asking them to select some attributes.

In the product archive page, Add to Cart does not display because a variation must first be chosen before adding to cart on the product page.

Product categories are the primary way to group products with similar features. You can also add subcategories if desired.

For example, if you sell clothing, you might have “t-shirts”, “hoodies” and “pants” as categories.

How to add/edit product categories

Categories are managed from the Products > Categories screen.

Similar to categories on your posts in WordPress, you can add, delete, and edit product categories.

• Add a Name.
• Add a Slug (optional); this is the URL-friendly version of the name.
• Choose a Parent if this is a subcategory.
• Enter a Description (optional); some themes display this.
• Choose the Display type. Decide what is shown on the category’s landing page. “Standard” uses your theme’s default. “Subcategories” will display only the subcategories. “Products” only displays products. “Both” will display subcategories and products below that.
• Upload/Add Image (optional);  Some themes have pages where product category images are displayed, so this is a good idea.

Storefront by default displays product category images on the homepage template.

Categories can also be reordered by dragging and dropping – this order is used by default on the front end whenever the categories are listed. This includes both widgets and the category/subcategory views on product pages.

Since WooCommerce 3.3, there will be a default category. Every product must be assigned to a category, so the default category will be automatically assigned if the product is not assigned to any other category. By default, this category will be named “Uncategorized” and can not be deleted. However, you can rename the category. You can also switch the default category using the row actions underneath the category name, then the “Uncategorized” category can be deleted as it is no longer the default.

When you add a new product via Products > Add Product, you can select this new product category from the list.

Alternatively, you can go to Products > Add Product directly, and select Add New Product Category.

The taxonomy is product_cat. And the filtering feature becomes AJAX-enabled for friendlier use once there are 100 categories.

Product tags

What are product tags?

Product tags are another way to relate products to each other, next to product categories. Contrary to categories, there is no hierarchy in tags; so there are no “subtags.”

For example, if you sell clothing, and you have a lot of cat prints, you could make a tag for “cat.” Then add that tag to the menu or sidebar so cat lovers can easily find all t-shirts, hoodies, and pants with cat prints.

How to add/edit product tags

Tags can be added similarly to adding product categories and work in exactly the same way as post tags. See the WordPress.org Codex for more information.

The taxonomy is product_tag.

Product attributes

What are product attributes?

A third and important way to group products is to use attributes. There are two uses of this data type that are relevant for WooCommerce:

• First is via WooCommerce widgets. “Filter Products by Attribute” allows you to select a specific attribute. If you add this widget to your sidebar, customers can filter products in your store based on the attribute. 
• Second is via variable products. To create a variable product, an attribute must first be defined for the product. These attributes can then be used to make a distinction between different variations. More info at: Variable Products.

For example, if you’re selling clothing, two logical attributes are “color” and “size”, so people can search across categories for a color that fits their style and type and clothing available in their size.

How to add/edit product attributes

Set global attributes

Go to Products > Attributes to add, edit, and remove attributes.

Here you can quickly and easily add attributes and their terms.

• Add a Name.
• Add a Slug; (optional); this is the URL-friendly version of the name.
• Enable Archives if desired. If enabled, you can view a page with all products having this attribute. For example, if you have this enabled, and “black” is one of the options under “color”, you can add http://yourstore.com/pa_color/black/ to your menu to only display black clothing – pa stands for “product attribute.”
• Select a Default sort order. Choose between “Name”, “Name (numeric)”, “Term ID” or “Custom ordering” where you decide by dragging and dropping the terms in the list when configuring the terms (see below). “Name (numeric)” is relevant if the values are numbers. If you select “Name”, it sorts alphabetically with 1 and 10 preceding 2. If you select “Name (numeric)” it sorts based on numerical value. 

Select Add Attribute.

The attribute is added in the table on the right, but without values.

Select the “Configure terms” text to add attribute values.

Next Add New “Attribute name”, where “Attribute name” automatically takes the name you gave the attribute in the previous step.

Add as many values as you wish. If you selected “Custom ordering” for the attribute, reordering your values can be done here.

Add global attributes to product

Add the created attributes to your products.

1. Go to: Products > Add Product (or edit an existing one).
2. Select the Attributes tab in the Product Data. There you can choose any of the attributes that you’ve created in the dropdown menu.
3. Select Add.

If you selected a global attribute that you previously created, you can select terms that you added previously.

Add custom attributes

Alternatively, add an attribute you only want to use for one product. This would only be ideal if you have a product with unique variations.

1. Go to: Product > Add Product.
2. Select the Attributes tab.
3. Select Custom product attribute in the dropdown and follow the above steps.

Update as of WooCommerce 3.3

WooCommerce version 3.3 and higher comes with support for making themes compatible with WooCommerce and improvements to image size rendering and cropping. These new features mean that:

• Blurry images caused by theme incompatibility or overriding code should no longer occur.
• Store owners can control width and height of their main images.
• Thumbnail resizing can be done automatically or manually.
• Images shown to customers always look great by default, so your products keep selling themselves!

Other solutions

Should you be using a version of WooCommerce prior to 3.3, we recommend updating to the latest version to take advantage of features described above.

If, for some reason, you don’t wish to use the latest version or updating to 3.3 doesn’t fix the issue you’re experiencing, it could be:

• Your image size settings are too small.
• Original images need to be of a higher resolution.

To solve this:

• Your image dimensions should match or be higher than those of your theme.
• Original images you upload should be at least 800 x 800px or higher to work for most themes.

Image types

• Single Product Image: Largest image on the individual product details page and refers to the main/featured image.
• Catalog Images: Medium-sized image used in product loops, such as the Shop page, Product Category pages, Related products, Up-sells, and Cross-sells.
• Product Thumbnail Images: Smallest image commonly used in the Cart, Widgets and (optional) Gallery images underneath the Single Product Image.

Standard image dimensions

In WooCommerce version 3.2x and below, Product Image settings can be found at WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Display > Product Images. Note that the first number is width and the second height.

The images you upload are resized to match the values you input. For example, if your settings are 100×100 and you upload a 300×600 image it is resized to 100×200. You can also choose to ‘hard crop’ your images, which forces them to be the size specified in the settings, regardless of the raw image you upload, so they’re cropped rather than distorted in scale.

If you change settings after uploading product imagery, you need to regenerate thumbnails within WordPress for the changes to apply. To do this, we recommend using the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin.

As of WooCommerce version 3.3, Product Image settings can be found under the Customizer, in WooCommerce > Product Images:

Find theme’s product image dimensions

The theme you chose delegates the max size an image will be, so you need to know the dimensions in which it renders them to set those in WooCommerce.

Catalog Images

Determine where your theme renders catalog thumbnails the largest. In some cases, this is the shop page; in the Twenty Eleven theme, it is in the related products loop.

With the developer tools enable in your browser of choice, you can right-click the image and select “Inspect” or “Inspect Element”. This will tell you the image dimensions. Make a note of this as we need to use them later.

In Storefront (above), the largest catalog images are rendered at 213 x 213px.

Single Product Image

Repeat the process for the single product image — the largest image on a product page.

In Storefront, the largest Single Product Image is rendered at 298 x 298px.

Product Thumbnail

The smallest is likely the thumbnail in the product gallery. Repeat the inspection process to get the dimensions.

In Storefront, it renders at 43 x 43px.

Adjust image dimensions and regenerate thumbnails

Now that all thumbnail image sizes for our specific theme are known, we can add these new dimensions to WooCommerce to ensure that future image sizes will be this size or larger.

In WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Display, be sure that the maximum image sizes are at least as big as the dimensions your theme is rendering for those thumbnails. Then Save Changes.

Any new product images that are uploaded will now have thumbnails in these settings, and should appear without distortion or blurriness.

HiDPI displays commonly known as retina displays contain twice as many pixels, or more, than older displays. For pixel perfect imagery on retina displays, set your thumbnails to be double the size rendered by the theme. For example, if a theme renders images at 80 x 80px  you want them to be 160 x 160px.

This can impact performance, as larger images take longer to load. This is a personal preference, and you should consult your analytics before deciding. Your stats should tell you what devices and screen sizes the majority of your customers use.

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Downloadable Products.
2. Select a File Download Method from the dropdown.
   • Force Downloads – File downloads are forced, using PHP. To ensure files are protected from direct linking, Force Downloads can be used. Files are served by PHP. However, if your files are large, or the server is underpowered, you may experience timeouts during download. In this case, you need to either look at your server or use the redirect method.
   • X-Accel-Redirect/X-Sendfile – Downloads are handled by the server (nginx/apache). This method requires the X-Accel-Redirect/X-Sendfile module to be installed and enabled on the server. Confirm with your web host that one of these modules is installed before using this method. It’s the most reliable method because the file is served directly to the customer and gives you the best performance. Files are also protected by an .htaccess file, making it secure.
   • Redirect only (insecure) – When users download a file, their link redirects to the file. Using this method means your files will be unprotected and whoever has the upload link will be able to access the file, even when they are not logged in.
3. Choose a level of Access Restriction.
   • Tick the Downloads Require Login checkbox if you want users to be logged in to download files. Guest checkout would need to be disabled.
   • Tick the Grant access to downloadable products after payment checkbox if you wish to grant access to files when orders are Processing, instead of Completed.
4. Select Append a unique string to filename for security if you want to make sure that the security of your files is enhanced. It’s recommended to be turned on and will be turned on by default, but it’s not required if someone has properly configured their upload directory. No filename or links will be affected when you turn it on, only files uploaded when this setting is checked will have a unique string added to them.  This is setting is fully backward compatible and can be turned off-on at whim without affecting any already generated file links.
5. Save changes.

Protecting your uploads directory

By default WooCommerce introduces a .htaccess file to protect your wp-content/uploads/woocommerce_uploads directory, however, this doesn’t guarantee the protection of this directory, since everything depends on the configuration of the server.

Using NGINX Server?

If you using NGINX server for your site along with X-Accel-Redirect/X-Sendfile or Force Downloads download method, it is necessary that you add this configuration for better security:

# Protect WooCommerce upload folder from being accessed directly.
# You may want to change this config if you are using "Redirect Only" method for downloadable products.
# Place this config towards the end of "server" block in nGinx configuration.

Unique String after the Filename

WooCommerce appends a unique string to the filename of uploaded files to enhance security.

It is recommended to be turned on and will be turned on by default, but it’s not required if you have already properly configured your upload directory. No filename or links will be affected when you turn it on, only files uploaded when this setting is checked will have a unique string added to them.

This is setting is fully backwards compatible and can be turned off-on at whim without affecting any already generated file links.

You can access this setting by going to WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Downloadable products.

Creating downloadable products

Downloadable Simple Products

To get started:

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Products > Add Product to add a new Simple product as outlined in Adding and Managing Products.
2. Tick the Downloadable checkbox.
   

   

   After ticking this box, other options appear: Downloadable Files, Download Limit, Download Expiry.

3. Select the Add file button, and then name the file. Enter the downloadable URL if it’s hosted elsewhere, or select the Choose file button to either insert an existing file from your Media Library or to Upload a new file. Upload the file and click Insert to set up each downloadable file URL. Match the URL of the product to the URL of your site. (i.e., if you have a www in your site URL, then make sure that is in the file URL.)
4. Enter “Download limit” (optional). Once a user hits this limit, they can no longer download the file.
5. Enter “Download expiry.” If you define a number of days, download links expire after that.
6. Save.

Downloadable Variations

Variable products can also have downloadable variations. When adding a variation tick the Downloadable checkbox and more options appear.

Options work the same as regular products: Set the file path, optionally choose a download limit and expiry, and save.

Combining Downloadable and Virtual products

If you tick the Downloadable checkboxes, products can have stock and are treated as physical products. This allows you to sell downloads and real products together.

If you want to add/sell a downloadable product that does not have a physical component, enable the Virtual option.

Usage

The ordering process for downloadable products is:

1. The customer adds a downloadable product to their cart.
2. The customer checks out and pays.
3. After the payment, several things can happen depending on your setup:
   • If items in the order are all downloadable + virtual, the order is completed.
   • If items are physical and downloadable/virtual, the order is processing until you change it.
4. Once complete, or if the option “Grant access to downloadable products after payment” is enabled, the customer can:
   • Be granted download permission
   • See download links on the order received page
   • See download links in their email notification
   • See download links on their ‘My Account’ page if logged in

Customers can then download files.

Invoice/Order Email

The customer receives an invoice/order confirmation with a clickable link to download if the order is processed and paid.

Managing Orders with Downloadable Line items

1. Go to: WooCommerce > Orders and select the order to view or edit.
2. Scroll down to the Downloadable Product Permissions meta box, which displays the download and how many times the customer had accessed it.
3. Revoke access, grant access to new downloads, or exit order.

Download logs/reports

Downloads of digital/downloadable products have unique IDs that are tracked and logged in Reports. More at: WooCommerce Reports.

FAQs

What happens if I edit a downloadable product’s files after customers have purchased it?

• Editing a download file row (changing the name, file URL or both) updates the download links on past purchases, but it leaves the expiry date and downloads remaining intact.
• Adding a new download does not affect past orders. Only new purchasers gain permission to download it.

If you have products that grant ‘lifetime access’ or similar to all downloads added to a product, a subscription or membership may be more appropriate. You can also combine files into a single archive (zip). If you want to restore previous functionality, there is a plugin available here.

Why does WooCommerce link to the URL of the file?

When setting up your downloadable product, ensure that the downloadable file settings use the same URL formatting that your site does. Make sure that it matches the site URL in your WordPress settings. (i.e. if www is in your site URL, it needs to be in the file URL).

Why don’t I see a file link on the order received page?

If you are using PayPal, there is a delay when using the IPN to track payments. You can instead enable Payment Data Transfer (PDT) by going to gateway settings and selecting it as the PayPal Identity Token.

Payment Data Transfer (PDT) is a notification service that, once activated, can send transaction-related information immediately to merchants who are using PayPal payment buttons (PayPal Payments Standard). Merchants can display these transaction details on their website to confirm the buyer’s payment was successful.

You can enable PDT in your PayPal account under Profile > Profile and Settings > My Selling Tools > Website Preferences.

Enable auto-return, and enter the return URL as http://yoursite.com/checkout/order-received/ (replacing yoursite.com with your site’s address), then enable PDT. Copy your identity token to your settings under WooCommerce > Settings > Checkout > Paypal. This will allow payments to be verified without the need for PayPal IPN.

Do old orders get access to new downloads after a product is edited?

No, this feature was removed in WooCommerce 3.0.

Can I use cloud storage to store my files and downloads?

Most definitely! WooCommerce only needs an external URL that points to your digital download file. If it is a valid external download URL, then WooCommerce works perfectly. There is no further validation.

How do I create an album of song downloads to sell music?

It’s possible to do this with Product Bundles (separate purchase). The use case at Create Downloadable Item Packages shows you how.

What file extensions can I use?

WooCommerce allows for the same file extensions defined by WordPress. You can see the full list via WordPress Codex: Uploading Files.

What is the maximum file size that can be used?

WooCommerce itself has no limitation on the maximum file size that can be used, however, your website’s server likely has a maximum limit. Reach out to your hosting company to have that limit increased.

To add an up-sell or cross-sell to a product:

1. Go to WooCommerce > Products and select the product on which you’d like to show an up-sell or cross-sell.
2. Scroll down to the Product Data panel.
3. Select the Linked Products tab in the left menu.
4. Add the product you wish to link to by searching for it.
5. Update.

Up-Sells

Up-sells are products that you recommend instead of the currently viewed product.

They are typically products that are more profitable or better quality or more expensive. Depending on your theme template, these products display on the single product page underneath the product’s description.

• Up-sells (user defined) show on the product page.

Cross-Sells

Cross-sells are products that you promote in the cart, based on the current product.

They are typically complementary items. For example, if you are selling a laptop, cross-sells might be a protective case or stickers or a special adapter. Or if you’re selling a ninja t-shirt, they could be a ninja hoodie and ninja socks.

Depending on your theme template, they display on the cart page underneath the cart products table with a thumbnail image.

• Cross-sells (user defined) show on the cart page.

Related Products

Related Products is a section on some templates that pulls products from your store that share the same tags or categories as the current product.

These products cannot be specified in the admin, but can be influenced by grouping similar products in the same category or by using the same tags.

• Related products (automatic) also show on the product page.

Import, export or update hundreds or thousands of products in your WooCommerce store with a single CSV. This tool supports all product types, including variations.

• First-time store owners get started more quickly by exporting and importing products during setup.
• Existing store owners can update tens or hundreds of products with new info or place them on sale, or sync multiple storefronts.

Create your CSV

To import new products or update existing products, you need a CSV containing your product information. You can:

• Export a CSV of products from an existing store.
• Download a CSV file with sample data from GitHub and replace it.
• Use your own CSV. Any information you wish to include should follow the formatting and columns of the Product CSV Import Schema.

If using the built-in WooCommerce Product CSV Importer and Exporter tool to export a CSV, it already follows the schema and is ready to use. If using the blank and formatted CSV file, it also follows the schema; just be sure to enter the info as instructed at Product CSV Import Schema.

General guidelines

• CSVs should be in UTF-8 format.
• Dates should be defined for the store’s local timezone.
• Use 1 or 0 in your CSV, if importing a Boolean value (true or false)
• Multiple values in a field get separated with commas.
• Wrapping values in quotes allows you to insert a comma.
• Prefix the id with id: if referencing an existing product ID. No prefix is needed if referencing an SKU. For example: id:100, SKU101
• Custom meta is supported/imported but only plain text – no support for JSON or Serialized data.
• Taxonomy term hierarchy is denoted with >, terms are separated with commas.
• Draft products are not exported, only published and privately published products.

Images

• Images need to be pre-uploaded or available online to import to your store.
• External URLs are supported and imported into the Media Library if used.
• You can define the filename if the image already exists in the Media Library.

Import

Adding New Products

First-time and existing store owners using WooCommerce can use the CSV to add new products with one upload.

1/ Go to: WooCommerce > Products.

2/ Select Import at the top. The Upload CSV File screen displays.

3/ Select Choose File and the CSV you wish you use.

CSV delimiter (Advanced option): Generally CSV elements are separated by a comma. If you are using a different delimiter in your file, you can set it here.

4/ Continue.

The Column Mapping screen displays, and WooCommerce automatically attempts to match or “map” the Column Name from your CSV to Fields.

5/ Use dropdown menus on the right side to adjust fields or indicate ‘Do not import.’

*Any unrecognized columns will not be imported by default.

6/ Select Run the Importer.

7/ Wait until the Importer is finished. Do not refresh or touch the browser while in progress.

Update Existing Products

Store owners can use the CSV Importer tool to update existing products with new info, e.g., Adding a brand, changing a tax class, bulk-update for a special sale or event, etc.

1/ Make a CSV file as indicated in Create Your CSV, using the IDs and/or SKUs of products you wish to update.

The importer uses the ID and/or SKU to auto-match and auto-update whatever info you enter on each line.

2/ Go to: WooCommerce > Products.

3/ Select Import at the top. The Upload CSV File screen displays.

4/ Select Choose File and the CSV you wish you use.

5/ Tick the checkbox for Update Existing Products.

6/ Continue.

Converting existing simple product to variable product

Store owners can use the CSV Importer tool to convert the existing simple product to a variable. In order to do that, the following steps need to be taken:

1/ Create a simple product that has a price and SKU.
2/ Export product via built-in CSV Exporter on the All Products page.
3/ Open CSV file and convert the simple product to a variable. Steps that need to be taken for it (for example to convert to a variable product with 1 attribute and 2 variations):

• Add 2 new rows
• Add 4 new columns after the last column:

   

• Attribute 1 name

• Attribute 1 value(s)
• Attribute 1 visible
• Attribute 1 global

In our case, we are adding Size variations so our new 4 columns look as follows:

• Change the type of the product from simple to variable and add type variation to variation rows (2 new rows that you created). Add SKU to variation rows. Give it a name as well. It looks like this in our example:

• Update the following columns as well (and any other columns if needed):

• Very important – add SKU to all fields in the Parent column – this is to map parent product with its variations:

4/ Save a new CSV file.

5/ Import the updated CSV file back to the site using built-in CSV Importer on All Products view.

6/ Select to update existing products before import since we want to update the
existing product on the site:

7/ Proceed with import (nothing to be mapped).

8/ You will see the following which is expected:

9/ Navigate to the product. You will see that it is now variable and has 1 attribute added but no variations were created. Note that Used for variations checkbox is not selected. This is also expected:

10/ Next, open the CSV file again (the one where you already created rows for variations) and delete the parent product row. Leave variations rows without changes:

11/ Save the updated CSV file.

12/ Next, import updated CSV file to the site but this time don’t select the box next to Update existing products:

13/ Proceed with import (no fields need to be mapped). You should see that variations have been imported:

14/ After completing the import, navigate to the product. It should now be a variable product with variations:

Export

Store owners wishing to export their current catalog of products for any reason can generate a CSV using the Product Importer/Exporter.

1/ Go to: WooCommerce > Products.

2/ Select Export at the top. The Export Products screen displays.

3/ Select to Export All Columns. Or select which columns to export by using the dropdown menu.

4/ Select to Export All Products. Or select which product types to export by using the dropdown menu.

5/Select to Export All Categories. Or select which categories to export by using the dropdown menu.

6/ Tick the box to Export Custom Meta, if you need this info.

Meta data on your products is typically from other plugins. Meta data columns are exported following the meta:-prefix standard detailed above in the importer mapping section. By default, no additional meta data is exported.

7/ Select Generate CSV. Wait for the export to finish.

8/ Exit the exporter.

Why aren’t all my products exported?

Previous to WooCommerce 3.6.5, only products with a status of ‘publish’ or ‘private’ were exported, not those in ‘draft.’ If you want to change that, there’s a filter you can use, but this would require custom coding, which we can’t provide assistance with.

Previous to WooCommerce 3.6.5, only products with a status of ‘publish’ or ‘private’ were imported, not those in ‘draft.’ As of WooCommerce 3.7, CSV product import now allows true/false values for the published field, as well as the original 0 (private), -1 (draft), 1 (publish) values.

Permission error when importing?

Are you seeing the following permission error when importing your CSV file?
Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.

When an import file contains HTML the file type can be mis-detected by WordPress on some servers. One workaround is to add the following line to your wp-config.php file:
define( 'ALLOW_UNFILTERED_UPLOADS', true );

For security reasons you can only enable this temporarily for the time of import, and then remove it again from the configuration file.

How to increase the CSV import maximum size?

The Maximum size value is set at the server level. To increase the maximum file size, please contact your hosting company. As a workaround, you can split the CSV into multiple parts to upload separately.

Where to find WooCommerce Customizer

From the WordPress dashboard, go to: Appearance > Customize.

In the Customize menu, select WooCommerce:

Under WooCommerce are five options:

• Store Notice
• Product Catalog
• Product Page
• Product Images
• Checkout

Each is covered in detail below.

Store Notice

Store Notice allows you to enter a site-wide message shown to everyone visiting your store. The message can be:

• Informational – A note that tells customers of shipping delays due to weather conditions. An ‘away’ notice if on vacation.
• Promotional – A note advertising an event, a holiday special, a bundle, a sale on all/some items or free shipping.

Display a Store Notice

To show customers a site-wide Store Notice:

1/ Go to: Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Store Notice:

2/ Enter a message in the text area.

3/ Tick the box for Enable Store Notice.

4/ Preview how the Store Notice looks on your site/store.

5/ Publish when satisfied and ready for your Store Notice to go live.

What Visitors See

This is how the Store Notice displays on the front end of your store/site. Visitors can choose to Dismiss the notice after seeing it once.

*Location and appearance of the Store Notice will vary, depending on the theme you’re using. The screenshot above is with our free Storefront theme.

Edit or Remove a Store Notice

To change or stop displaying a site-wide Store Notice:

1/ Go to: Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Store Notice:

2/ To alter the Store Notice:

• Edit the message in the text area to change it.

• Untick the box for Enable Store Notice to stop displaying to visitors.

3/ Publish to save changes.

Schedule a Store Notice

Using the Schedule option for Store Notice can be helpful when running a promotion for a limited time or ending a sale/discount at midnight on a specific date.

In this example, we want to discontinue the Free Shipping offer when it expires end of day on February 28.

1/ Go to Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Store Notice to view and access the current/published promotion.

2/ Untick box for Enable Store Notice.

3/ Select the gear wheel. A panel opens.

4/ Select Schedule on the right menu, then enter the Date and Time you want the change to take effect.

5/ Select Schedule to make changes you entered on the future Date and Time indicated.

*You need to disable sale discounts, coupon codes or limited time offers. Removing the notice does not automatically stop the promotion from running.

Product Catalog

All options for Product Catalog can be found at: Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Catalog.

Product Catalog allows you to choose:

• What to display on the Shop page
• What to display on Category pages
• How to sort products in a Category
• How many products to show in a single row
• How many rows of products to display on a page

Shop Page

Your Shop Page can display Products, Categories, or both. We recommend selecting one for a clean look.

1/ Select Products or Categories from the dropdown.

2/ Preview your selection live. You must be viewing the Shop page.

3/ Publish to save and go live.

Category Pages

Your Category Pages can display Products or Subcategories within a Category, or both. Selecting one is recommended.

If you only have a few products, or you have no subcategories, there may be no difference in appearance.

1/ Select Products or Subcategories from the dropdown.

2/ Preview your selection live. You must be viewing a Category page.

3/ Publish to save and go live.

Default product sorting

Default Product Sorting allows you to control the order in which products are displayed, which influences how products are viewed by default on Shop and Category pages. Visitors still have the option to sort product in a different way, if desired.

Default sorting (custom ordering + name) – display products alphabetically by name. Where the product sort order has been customized, that custom order is considered first, and alphabetically by name second (if products share the same order positions). In your store, customer will see this as Default Sorting.

Sort by Popularity (sales) – display products according to amounts sold, from most to least. Customers see Sort by Popularity.

Sort by Average rating – display products based on average review ratings, from highest to lowest.

Sort by most recent – display products in the order they were added to the store, newest to oldest. Customer see Sort by Latest.

Sort by price (asc / desc) – sort product by price either lowest to highest (asc) or highest to lowest (desc). Customer see either Sort by price: low to high, or Sort by price: high to low.

In this example, we’ve chosen Sort by price (asc) (Sort by price: low to high, shown with a ), and the customer is about to select to Sort by newsness.

To choose a Default Sort Order:

1/ Select an option from the dropdown:

2/ Preview your selection live. You can be viewing the Shop page or a Category page.

3/ Publish to save and go live.

Products per Row

Products per Row allows you to choose the number of items that appear in a single row on Shop and Category pages.

Be sensitive to:

• Size of a product image
• Space on a computer/laptop, tablet or mobile device
• The optimal experience for a customer viewing and buying your products

1/ Use arrows to increase/decrease the number of products.

2/ Preview your selection live. You can be viewing the Shop page or a Category page.

3/ Test on different devices. Below is an example of different views, using the same settings.

Product Page

Product Page has two options that apply to single product pages:

• Sticky Add-to-Cart – It’s a small content bar at the top of the browser window which includes relevant product information and an add-to-cart button. It slides into view once the standard add-to-cart button has scrolled out of view.

• Product Pagination – Displays next and previous links on product pages. A product thumbnail is displayed with the title revealed on hover.

Product Images

Product Images has two features:

• Allows you to select how Catalog and Thumbnail images are sized and cropped
• Automatically resizes Catalog and Thumbnail images site-wide on your store when a published change is made*

This saves you time and energy in manually cropping and resizing each one.

Image Types

• Catalog Images are medium-sized images that appear on the Shop page, Category pages, and for Related products, Up-sells and Cross-sells.
• Thumbnail Images are the smallest images used in the Cart, Widgets and (optional) Gallery images underneath the Single Product Image on individual product details pages.
• Single Product Image is the largest image and refers to the main/featured image. Product Images settings in WooCommerce Customizer do not apply to these. To add, edit or delete the Single Product Image or Product Image Gallery, see: Adding Product Images and Galleries.

* Previously, thumbnails needed to be regenerated using a third-party plugin. WooCommerce 3.3x now handles this for you. Regeneration will not be triggered for changed made only in Preview mode.

Resize and Crop Thumbnail Images

1/ Go to: Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Images.

2/ Select one:

• 1:1 – Square image

• Custom – You select the ratio in which images are cropped. In this example, 1:2 is entered; and one image cannot be enlarged to meet this requirement.

• Uncropped – Images appear as is, which can result in all being different unless you used photos that are uniform in size and resolution. The screenshot below is an example of this: One is perfectly square, the next is a smaller square, and the last is a rectangle.

3/ Test on different devices. Below is an example of different views, using the same settings.

• On a computer/laptop screen

• On a tablet.

• On a mobile device.

4/ Publish to save and go live.

Checkout

All options for Checkout can be found at: Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Checkout.

You can now set whether certain fields are required or optional depending on the data you wish to collect. You can also choose to highlight the required fields with an asterisk, which is the default.

It is recommended to create Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions pages, and then you can set them here. The pages set are linked to along with the text you enter and appear on the Checkout page like this:

The “privacy policy” link opens the page in a new window, while the “terms and conditions” link opens a box on the page showing the contents of the terms and conditions page.  An order cannot be placed without checking the required terms and conditions box.

FAQs

I cannot find WooCommerce Customizer.

Stores using WooCommerce 3.3x+ have this option available at: Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce. Stores using a version of WooCommerce prior to 3.3.0 will see Store Notice and Product Images at: WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Display section; Product Catalog is new.

We recommend updating to the latest version of WooCommerce to take advantage of new and improved features and functionality. Thanks!

Can I still use the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin?

Yes, you can. But it’s unnecessary if using WooCommerce 3.3.0 or above because a change to a new or different them, or any live change in Product Catalog or Product Images, triggers WooCommerce to auto-size and auto-update thumbnail and product catalog images for you.

You can also use the Regenerate Shop Thumbnails option at: WooCommerce > Status > Tools.
